Shenendehowa athletics report: Nov. 2

CLIFTON PARK — Our rundown with the latest top-five news items concerning Shenendehowa athletics.

ONE: With a 2-1 victory Sunday, the Shenendehowa field hockey team picked up its fifth Section II Class A title in the last eight years.

The Plainsmen beat Saratoga Springs in the championship game, with the victory marking the third time this season Shenendehowa bested its No. 1 rival.

Taryn Marra and Kelly Quinn scored the goals for the Plainsmen, which advanced into regional play.

TWO: This Wednesday, the Shenendehowa girls’ soccer team will take on Niskayuna for the Section II Class AA title.

The Plainsmen advanced to the championship match with a 2-0 victory against Bethlehem.

THREE: Both the Shenendehowa volleyball teams will be in action tomorrow, with the boys taking on Niskayuna and the girls facing Guilderland. Those games are semifinal contests.

FOUR: The Shenendehowa football team’s season came to a close Friday with a 35-7 loss to rival Saratoga Springs in the semifinals of the Section II Class AA postseason.

Dakota Harvey led Saratoga Springs with three touchdown rushes. With the win, the Blue Streaks improved to 8-0 on the season.

Shenendehowa’s lone touchdown came on a short run from Carl Fiore, a score which was the first of the game.

The loss capped a 4-5 season for the Plainsmen, which won the Section II Class AA Super Bowl in 2014. Shenendehowa had defeated Columbia 28-17 in the quarterfinals of this year’s postseason.

FIVE: The Shenendehowa cross country teams competed at Saturday’s Suburban Council Championships at Saratoga Spa State Park, with the girls taking second place and the boys getting third.

For the boys’ team, Mitchell Halpern led the way with a sixth-place finish at 15:33.62, while top-20 finishes also came from Henry Christopher (15:59.46, 14th place), Alex Matson (16:00.81, 15th place), and Joshua Lacey (16:04.05, 17th place).

For the girls’ team, Danielle Jordan finished in second place at 17:21.12, while Julia Zachgo was eighth at 17:48.72. Kristina Watrobski also had a top-20 finish with a 18:23.91 mark, good for 17th place.

Saratoga Springs swept both team titles.
