Fall sports: 10 Shenendehowa competitions of note

CLIFTON PARK — With most teams opening their training camps Aug. 15, the fall sports season is underway for the Shenendehowa High School teams.

Games, matches and meets start in the final week of August. Here are 10 of the most-anticipated sporting events this fall season for the Plainsmen teams, as presently scheduled:

GETTING IT GOING

Who: Golf

When: Aug. 25, 11 a.m.

Where: Town of Colonie Golf Course

What: The first official sporting event of the fall season for Shenendehowa sees its golf team, the defending Suburban Council champions, take on Shaker.

FIRST SERVE

Who: Girls’ tennis

When: Aug. 29, 11 a.m.

Where: Shenendehowa

What: Against local rival Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, the Plainsmen will open their 2016 season with a home match.

FIRST DANCE

Who: Boys’ volleyball

When: Sept. 2, 5:30 p.m.

Where: Bethlehem

What: After dethroning Bethlehem in last year’s championship, Shenendehowa will play the first of (likely) three matchups this season with its top rival.

BEST CLASH

Who: Cross country

When: Sept. 6, 4:15 p.m.

Where: Saratoga Spa State Park

What: Shenendehowa’s boys’ and girls’ teams take on archrival Saratoga Springs, plus Columbia and Guilderland in an early-season showdown.

CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH

Who: Field hockey

When: Sept. 7, 6 p.m.

Where: Shenendehowa

What: The defending Section II Class A champion plays host to its top rival, Saratoga Springs, which the Plainsmen beat in the 2015 area title game.

TAKING ON THE CHAMPS

Who: Boys’ soccer

When: Sept. 20, 4:15 p.m.

Where: Ballston Spa

What: After falling in a dramatic regular season game last season to the Scotties, Shenendehowa will travel to Ballston Spa this season for its meeting with last year’s area champions.

FRIENDLY RIVALS

Who: Girls’ swimming

When: Sept. 21, 4:30 p.m.

Where: Shenendehowa

What: The Plainsmen will play host to Ballston Spa, the school where first-year Shenendehowa girls’ coach Sandy Stanislowsky coaches the boys’ swimming team.

OUT FOR REVENGE

Who: Girls’ soccer

When: Oct. 13, 7 p.m.

Where: Niskayuna

What: After falling to the Silver Warriors in last year’s Section II Class AA championship game in four overtimes, the Plainsmen will look to score a measure of revenge.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

Who: Football

When: Oct. 14, 7 p.m.

Where: Shenendehowa

What: How the Plainsmen fare in this Week 7 matchup against Guilderland will likely determine their seed for the Class AA postseason, just like it did in 2015’s Week 7.

STOP THE STREAK

Who: Girls’ volleyball

When: Oct. 19, 5:30 p.m.

Where: Shenendehowa

What: The Plainsmen will take their most realistic shot yet to end the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake program’s decades-long winning streak within Suburban Council play.
